#16 Some library wikis

A wiki is a collaborative website and authoring tool. Wikapaedia is a well known and very successful example. I looked at some library wikis.
1. Probably the most useful one which could be returned to as a general reference was "Library Success: A best practices wiki" http://libsuccess.org/index.php?title=Main_Page
It was designed as a one stop shop for great ideas and information for all types of librarians and looked to be full of useful knowledge. It is very broad and extensive and seems to cover all aspects of running and managing libraries.
2. SJCPL Subject Guides is a wiki set up by a library to enable users to:
  • learn about a subject
  • discover library events and materials
  • enjoy reading about something of interest

Users have the ability to comment.

e.g. Under the category of Books was the subject Biography & Memoir which included information and internet links on autobiography, journals, diaries, blogs, and scrapbooking. Subjects under the category of Recreation & Fitness were Gardening, Health, Pets, Sports and Recreation, Travel.

3. Book Lover's Wiki was developed by Princetown Library and consisted of book reviews. Anyone in their summer reading club could contribute with a chance to win prizes. Reveiwers werre asked to give a summary of the book, a reaction to it, and a star-rating.

#15 On Library 2.0 and Web 2.0

I read all 5 perspectives on Library 2.0.

This is such a paradigm shift. Not having a library background is a bit limiting because it means I don't automatically think in the information organisation, directories, databases, indexes layer. I describe my own thinking as "paper and pencil", linear, pedestrian, controlled.
Now, with Library 2.0, I glimpse a world best described by dynamic, multi layered, 3-dimensional, networked.
It provides the means to organise, communicate, express yourself, converse, create content, be original, learn and share with remixes and mash-ups. I'm gaining insights into the potential of interfaces such as Face Book through which my daughters network with people across the globe. I'm even contemplating investing the time to really come to grips with this and develop my own Face Book as an exercise in familiarising myself further.

Library 2.0 aims to be user-centric with traits such as collaborative, welcoming, user friendly, constant change, user participation, taking advantage of Web 2.0 technologies, and continuous improvement.

The State Library of Victoria's vision is "Victorians will have ready access to a comprehensive collection of Victorian documentary material and to worldwide information resources to enrich their cultural, educational, social and economic lives." I thought Michael Stephens described best how Library 2.0 will be incorporated in this. He describes how Library 2.0 can make the library a "socially and emotionally engaging centre for learning an experience." It can be a "strategy guide" for helping users find information, gather knowledge, and create content.

#14 Getting not-so-technical with Technorati

I played with Technorati. When i searched for Library 2.0 it came up with 17, 840 results - and rising! looking in the tabs there were 1010 blogs about Learning 2.0 and 1330 posts. There were also videos and photos.

In "popular blogs" there were Top - favourite blog, searches, blogs, videos, movie, news. The assasination of Benazir Bhutto was, of course, dominating current news and the tiger attack over Christmas featured in a video.

#13 Tagging, folksonomies & social bookmarking in Del.icio.us

The concept of tagging comes up again as it did in flickr and librarythings. Del.icio.us provides a method of bookmarking web pages and then categorising them with tags. The bookmarks can be accessed where ever you have computer access - very useful because most of us log onto different computers at home, work, and holiday etc.
There is also a social networking aspect to this. You can see how others have tagged similar links and find out about new websites that may be of interest.
I didn't choose to open an account at this stage. However, it could be useful.

#11LibraryThing

I really like this site and I am tempted to stay here, feeding in more and more books and seeing what others are reading. I had a look at the groups but chose not to become involved. I need to move on and finish my 23 things.
